Quito History

Quito, the city where I live, is the capital of Ecuador. I am very proud to say that Quito was designated the first UNESCO Heritage City in 1978 for it´s wonderforul colonial architecture.

The city has the least altered historic center in Latin America. Therefore the first thing you have to do in Quito is go to the downtown where you will be able to find a lot of architecture reliquies. The monasteries of San Francisco, La Basilica, La Coompañia, are examples of the old Baroque school of Quito, which is a mixture of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish, and Indigenous art. Even though there aren´t tall buldings there are a lot of colonial houses, in fact the entire downtown is full of colonial houses that hide Quito´s history.

I recommend this exploratory research trip because it provides you with knowledge, and at the same time you’re getting to know your city, before you start knowing other cities. Also you might not notice at first but this project has plenty to provide you with. For example, being familiar with your soundings. If left up to the text of the 16th century the fall of the Aztec Empire would be accredited only to Cortes, but as Kevin O. Collins stressed in The Fatal Flaws of the Aztec Empire we see that we must look past the conquest and look more to the political, and religious view of the Aztec. Writers, such as William Prescott saw the flaws in the manuscripts written by those under Cortes and stressed that it was the mismanagement of Tenochtitlan that caused its fall. Unfortunately for this paper I will not be focusing on the fall of the Aztec Empire, but I will be focusing on what made the empire great; its symbolism, myths, temples, and if only for a little its ruler Motecuhzoma the second. Tenochtitlan, the capital city of the Aztec Empire was in what is now present day Mexico City. Tenochtitlan was immense in size housing over 200,000 inhabitants at its high; the city was constructed on an island.…

Originally, a plaza is made to serve as the city’s center. At the heart of most Spanish colonial cities was a central plaza, with the main church, town council (cabildo) building, residences of the main civil and religious officials, and the residences of the most important residents (vecinos) of the town built there. The principal businesses were also located around this central plan. Radiated from the main square were streets in at right angles, a grid that could extend as the settlement grew, impeded only by geography. Architecturally, the Public Plaza becomes the centerpiece of the city pattern or also known as La Traza.…
