HISTORY While a woodsman named Moore initially settled Quitman County another settler is more frequently referenced in historical factors about the county. Since Moore did not have a legal title to the land he settled, Thomas B. Sadly, this division is very evident just by riding through town. In the town of Marks, Mississippi African Americans and Caucasians live on separate sides of the train track. The majority of Caucasian children attend the local private school while African American students attend the local public schools. Interestingly enough the division does not just show up with race. The public school district has a lot of competition and power struggles. This seems a serious barrier to progress. When school district are not cooperating and collaborating it negatively affects students, parents, and stakeholders. Most often families travel 30 to 62 miles to Batesville, Mississippi or Memphis, Tennessee. Students participate in some local extracurricular program activities developed by community members or organizations. Most popular in the community now is being a part of dance competitions and sports. Along with that is a strong faith basis. The church plays a pivotal role for culture and recreational resources. The Youth Opportunities Incorporated (Y.O.U.) organization provides several recreational opportunities for the community. The organization was awarded a grant, which they used to provide the community with a fitness gym and recreation center. These facilities are available to any members of the community. Young children are hosted during afterschool and summer school enrichment programs. The elementary school host a summer school program each summer. Summer program is strategically designed to be an enrichment and remediation giving more students the opportunity and motivation to attend the extended school year program. The extended school year and organization opportunities are still somewhat limited in comparison to other counties with resources more readily available.
