Perhaps on a subconscious level some smokers, have some sort of happy memory associated with smoking and the desire to smoke is simply a moment of nostalgia. In fact, Native Americans used tobacco for ceremonial practices as well as medicinal purposes, and when Christopher Columbus came to the Americas in 1492, he was introduced to the practice of smoking tobacco. When he later returned to Europe, he brought back with him some tobacco leaves along with some seeds. Over time the use of tobacco spread across Europe, where many people believed that it helped cure almost any common aliment (Brooks). In today’s modern world tobacco use has grown from this ceremonial practice to an everyday occurrence. In fact many people are addicted to tobacco use, due to the presence of the addictive substance nicotine, named after Jean Nicety whom brought tobacco from Portugal to France in the mid-16th century (Yamamoto). According to the American Cancer Society, as of 2012 nearly 18 percent of the population is addicted to some form of a tobacco product.
