Quinn Curias: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Leaving the cafe, Quinn Curias fanned herself with the menu. She was glancing around with bright eyes as she found another building that piqued her interest. She ran towards it, with the café’s menu flapping in the air behind her. “Wait up! Quinn, you’re going too fast,” said Thea Sloan as she began running after Quinn. Even though she was childhood friends with her, Thea’s personality seemed dim in comparison. She was the type of person who would sit in the corner of the library reading a book rather than exploring, preferring to draw the settings within her mind. However, she didn’t have any time to think, balancing her freshly bought caramel ginger ice cream while running towards Quinn. “Look at all of the flowers here Thea, don’t …show more content…
“Hi, I’m director of this portion of the facility. This building wasn’t exactly open when both of you entered, but I guess I can make an exception since you two didn’t enter the restricted area. Would you like a tour around, or are you going to keep looking for lizards here? I’m Dr. Peces,” said the man. “Sure,” the two girls replied. Dr. Peces then showed the two how to remove the dirt and bacteria from their clothes, and then gave them a protective coat. He also took out a small vial from the freezer, winking at the girls and telling them they’ll see what it’s for later. They followed him into the sole enclosed section, where the lights shone neon red. “Here is where we keep the fish for the Aquaculture part of research,” said Dr. Peces, “my favorite lake fish isn’t here though. However, we do have some warm water tilapia in this tank over here. Over there is some catfish, I forget which kind although they’re freshwater, and did I mention my last name means fishes in Spanish?” “No,” said Quinn as she whispered, “found one,” in Thea’s ear. The fish were quite large considering the tank was only a couple thousand gallons, and there were at least thirty fish in each tank. She thought they were at least a foot long. They then fed the fish nutritionally balanced pellets, to supplement the plant

I watched as Mrs. Poe stirred a pot of chili sedulously in the crowded kitchen. She'd planned everything, and it was all finally in order, yet she continued to stir the pot while everyone else rested before the lunch line formed. She seemed so dedicated, perfecting every stroke, making sure everything was perfect. When the lunch line began to form, I started putting warm rolls on every plate that was handed to me, studying the faces of those who waited, then continued to send them down the assembly line. I saw a man with bad burns, the pigment of his skin dis-colored in multiple areas.…

The month of October sees the boundaries of the Pacific Ocean push far beyond its shores. Every coastal British Columbian recognizes the seasonal dump of water from the Pacific, lifted through transpiration, which cascades onto the coastal rainforest. But, there's another part of the ocean currently surging hundreds of kilometers inland: Pacific salmon. October's Pacific rains create prime spawning conditions for wild Pacific salmon. It's also a banner month for the towering trees of British Columbia's coastal temperate rainforests.…

Recently, Betta splendens, otherwise known as bettas or Siamese fighting fish, have grown into one of the most popular ornamental fish (Monvises et al. 2009). More and more fish enthusiasts are adopting betta fish, meaning the fish are being kept in aquariums away from their evolutionarily fundamental habitats. These fish are originally from rice paddies and swampy areas in Thailand and other Southeast Asia countries (Jaroensutasinee and Jaroensutansinee 2001). Consequently, they have evolved in a manner that allows them to thrive in the swampy, humid environment. Bettas have developed a unique form and function to allow for their persistence in these areas.…

Stories that teach the importance of responsible interaction with Nature are seen throughout much of American literature, in particular much of Native American stories, such as "The Trickster Cycle", due to their cultural and practical relevance. The same lessons appear in colonial American literature, but more often as a response to irresponsible practices due to the sudden nature of the arrival of colonists and their swift westward expansion as seen in James Fenimore Cooper’s The Pioneers. In both cases, there is an implicit moral obligation of stewardship of the natural world. Stewardship meaning proper use and care for the world around them without waste, and with an understanding of the consequences of every interaction between man and nature. The fictional narratives found in "The Trickster Cycle" and The Pioneers use humor, moral weight, and…

Just Mercy Justice is a moral many people strive for, especially those that are sworn to protect us. It means fairness, honesty, righteousness, without those we cannot have justice. Unfortunately, even still today, that is exactly what our Criminal Justice System lacks the most. ‘Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption’ by Bryan Stevenson, is an incredibly moving and true story about the potential for mercy to restore the morals inside of us as well as acts as a loud wake-up call to try to mend and restore our warped Criminal Justice System from one of the most inspiring and ground-breaking lawyers of this century.…

    Beta Fish Survival

The purpose of this project was to observe the survival of a beta fish in a 3 litter Ozarka water bottle. It was hypothesized that the fish would survive if it was fed and the temperature, the ammonia and the nitrate levels were appropriate. The null hypothesis is that a beta fish can survive in an artificial environment. The ammonia level that was introduced into the habitat by the food given to the fish, would kill the fish when it got to a high level. The nitrate level would get higher for the fish excrement.…

This idea is supported by the frequented use of self-address implemented in the second half. The speaker becomes more involved. “I thought,” “I looked,” “I admired,” all produce a more active role on the part of the speaker. The turning point in the poem that triggers this alteration seems to be when the reader realizes that the fish is in fact still alive. “While his gills were breathing” (line 22) is the first action given to the fish and the first time he is addressed as a living thing.…

Aiza Nageeb A Fish Story Not everything in life is crystal clear; sometimes we need to dig deeper to find the true meaning behind a particular idea/thing. In the case study, "A Fish Story" a college professor is trying to teach his students a lesson by making them observe a small fish on a white plate. For three days in a row, the professor assigns the students the same assignment and as the days progress, the students find new results. The first day the students notice basic physical characteristics about the fish, like its size and the color of the plate it rests on. The second day the students use a book to find out about the type of fish it is, and the third day they dig deeper and observe minuscule details; like its weight, position of the mouth and texture.…
