Quinn: A Short Story

The moment I met Quinn, my life has been interesting. Fall consisted of coffee, apple cider, pumpkin doughnuts, and awkward get-togethers. I’ve met each of his immediate family members within that time. Now, it’s winter, and I received an invitation to the Pierce’s Christmas Dinner. Apparently, it’s a popular event in this town, and it’s almost mandatory to go when you’re invited--or that’s what I’ve heard. Anyway’s I had no idea what the heck to wear. I mean it was black tie, and all I had is blue jeans and flannels. I guess I could have gone shopping in a nice retail store, but I was also broke. I guess you could say “the struggle was real”. At least that what my teenage neighbors say, and honestly I couldn’t have agreed more. In the end, …show more content…
You might have thought that they’d have something, but literally it was all faded, and rotting. However, at the last shop, I stumbled upon what I can only call a miracle. A black, almost new, suit stood on a mannequin in the window. I practically ran to the counter in excitement. I couldn’t let anyone get to this before me. The price added up to about $56 after I added a tie, some socks, and a nice enough pair of dress shoes to the mix. Proudly, I drove home to admire my new …show more content…
The funeral is in a few days. I’ll go, so I don’t look like a possible suspect, if they’re smart enough to find out that it is in fact a murder and not a suicide. All of my murders are the same. They all take pills, they all react the same way. It’s all the same. So you see why I have to leave right? I can’t stay. The moment I met Quinn, my life has been interesting. Knowing that something special was going to happen that day, because she could feel it deep inside her soul, Charity sprung out of bed. Her grandpa had always said that she had the “gift of knowing,” the same as her grandmother, Mi 'thebe, had. Mi’ thebe was a Cherokee name that in English meant Shadowy Moon. As she stepped outside the old, log cabin she took a deep breath of the cool, fresh mountain air and then stretched her back, leaning from side to side to remove the stiffness she felt from sleeping in her not so comfortable bed, which consisted of a straw-ticked mattress atop a wooden bunk that seemed to became flatter each year as she grew older. Her grandfather had built the cabin some fifty-odd years earlier as a wedding gift for…

Plato's Closet I have always been a bit of a penny pincher, but I don't necessarily want to look like one. So I'm always on the lookout for quality second-hand clothing, shoes and accessories stores. One of my like-minded, very fashionable friends told me about Plato's Closet in Myrtle Beach she recently discovered and we rode there together one Saturday morning. As we walked through the doors, my first impression -- and something I always look for when scoping out good second-hand shops -- was the near-perfect orderliness.…

Commencing Unbound A lurid, fuchsia dress with generously powdered glitter and blaring, familiar music danced to by relatives you weren't even aware were relatives are trademarks of the traditional rite of passage into adulthood in my culture and one I never had the pleasure to experience due to my family's financial situation at that time. Familiar music playing in the background and only my immediate family sat close to the stage in awe to watch me. Graduating from my esteemed high school, Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH), was the omega to the alpha of my future. That experience both humbled me and triggered the tenacity in me to…

Every Christmas Eve our family gathers around the coffee table in our apartment in New York City. During the day we go to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and buy chocolate candies from the Greenwood Pastry on the corner. Uncle Riley leads the way as we walk the streets until the light begins to fade between the office towers and the crippled gargoyles forever perched on the corners of the buildings that illuminate a golden age gone by. We laugh together and reminisce about the previous Christmases we have spent together. The elevator seems quieter on these nights, almost as if it has a respect for the holiday, but I know it’s just because we’re all crammed in there together.…
