Quindlen The Importance Of Home

Improved Essays
When I first started reading, I didn’t see where the author was going with her essay and what points she was trying to make. I was very uninterested until she started elaborating on the importance of home. I would have liked it if Quindlen included a hook or a glimpse of her main idea in the first, or even the second paragraph. That would have drawn the reader in and made them curious about the rest of the essay.
Other than the beginning, I loved the essay. Quindlen made a lot of strong points. Ever since I can remember, I‘ve always had a certain kind of love and compassion towards those without a home. I remember feeling powerless that I couldn’t help them so I would watch videos of other people doing so. I haven’t met anyone who was passionate

Anna Quindlen uses many styles to successfully address the problem of hunger in America. The essay itself is more informative and eye-opening than it is persuasive. However, she uses rhetoric appeals to ultimately and effectively persuade us to her call to action. Anna is an experienced writer, having received many awards for her works, but that is not what makes her credible in this essay. She carefully uses ethos to show that she should be and the essay should be taken seriously, besides her use of statistics.…

I will discuss about the “Michael and Danielle and Family” video link. This couple with 6 children was renting from a landlord that let the house go into foreclosure. They were given 2 hours to evacuate their home, and were forced to live in a hotel. Although the statistics given by Berne et al., were from 1990, even current statistics still show that approximately 900,000 homeless people each year are families. Although Michael has a job, it still wasn’t enough to keep a roof over his family.…

The novel, The Catcher In The Rye, elucidated the stresses of high school and taught me how someone my age has experienced the difficulties of losing something important, while also dealing with the difficult aspects of being a teenager. Holden Caulfield, the main character, continues to refrain from opening up about his brother’s death to his teachers, family, and friends. This ultimately puts him in a dark and depressed state and makes him search for his true identity. Holden’s loss of innocence helped me learn how life will not always be balanced, and how one must persevere in overcoming the hardships that arise. To add, it revealed how a kid from a privileged life can struggle severely and that the people who love him are not always going…

The one thing that really struck me in the video was something that one of the homeless guys Nathaniel Mccray said. He said that he was a part of something called tent city. During my senior year in high school, for my civil engineering and architecture project, the theme was shelter. My team decided to focus on the residence and tent city, a group of homeless people that have learned to live self sufficiently amongst each other in their own environment.…

14.7 million children live in poverty. I am one of them. And yet, no one seems to notice me or care. I’m just another piece of garbage in the street, just another thin, starved child that is above the notice of anyone. I wish tears could change my life, as if they could somehow wash out the hurt, and pain, as if they could drown the struggle.…

Do you ever think about a deeper meaning or purpose for a book, or what kind of mood the author was in at that moment? In the memoir “The Glass Castle,” by Jeannette Walls, the authors purpose and tone are very clear throughout the whole novel. The authors tone ranges from happy, to sad, to angry, and Walls also makes it very evident that the intended purpose of the novel is to share her story and help the reader to want to overcome similar hardships that they may be going through. Throughout the book it is very clear that the author wants you to recognize the good and bad things in life and not take anything for granted.…

Watching the documentary Through Deaf Eyes was extremely informative. I was able to experience a side of deaf culture that I did not really know existed. It was incredible to see how far the deaf culture has come and learn where it came from. The documentary showed me just how cruel society could be when you are not seen as “normal”. The deaf community just wanted to be understood and treated with respect.…

In 30 Days Immigration it was interesting to see a man who strongly opposes illegal immigrants living with illegals, and growing sympathy for them over the course of his stay. What stood out to me the most was the connection he built with the daughter Karina, and their feud of political disputes. In this feud what stood out to me the most was the last scene of them together, when they are saying goodbye to each other. In this scene one sees that over time they have gotten to know each other and each other’s background that have influenced their worldviews, and those recognitions have allowed them to switch from getting into many disputes to forming a liking and sympathetic understanding for each other. This was excellent to see, because it shows that even people with opposite opinions can form strong relationships, they just have to take the time to understand the individuals paradigm and how it was formed.…

The Story of Pedro Serrano, as told by el Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega, had a deep impact on me. More specifically, the part that was most was the first interaction between Serrano, the main character, and the other unnamed survivor that was introduced halfway through the short story. Serrano had been stranded on the island for three years and had acquired hair all over—so much so, that it was compared by de la Vega to “an animal’s pelt.” The new survivor on the island was still dressed as a normal Spanish sailor, whereas Serrano had seemed to morph into a different person all together—one who was as mentally unstable as he was physically. When these two very different characters met for the first time, they were both shocked.…
