Being “American” can mean many different things to many different people. Someone who was born here versus someone who came here from a different country. Through the eyes of an immigrant being American could mean multitudinous opportunities to get a stable job and provide a safe home for their family. A natural-born American might be more aware of the flaws of the country they live in, rather than see everything it has to offer. Think about what being American means to you. “A Quilt of a Country” and “The Immigrant Contribution” both push this idea far beyond the normalized bounds.

Simple words can hit close to home and inspire people to act. In passage five the simple words are used to dig their way into people's hearts who have been personally
