Susan Cain, the author of Quiet, the power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking, puts a new light on introverts, and how society has affected our view on this personality. Especially in the workplace. Interviewers and interviewees are more open, and responsive to willing and ambitious extroverts, over a calculated, smart introvert at times. However, often in order to get ahead in the workplace, the extrovert mentality is the only way to go about it. Hiring managers are more often than not looking for the excited social, ambitious people to add to their company, which is why, it is important that introverts in the workplace are able to become an extrovert when needed in situations like those. However, we don’t always do. Quiet is a perfect example of that. Throughout the book the Author Susan Cain points out the flaws of extroverts and the powerful traits of introverts in the business world. However, the successful introverts that she mentions through her book, had to be an extrovert at some point. For instance, Rosa Parks for example was a powerful introvert, although in order to have stood up to the racial discrimination on the bus in 1955 she needed to become an extrovert. The same is with many of her other examples. While they may have been true introverts at heart, it required a little courage, and a bit of the extrovert mentality to accomplish many of the well-known achievements. Ricky Martin stated, “Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.” It isn’t necessarily that in order to be successful it is required to be extroverted, but even a little courage is a bit extroverted, and sometimes, it only takes just a little bit in order accomplish what is
