Beowulf The graphic novel Beowulf by Gareth Hinds focuses on a fabled hero, Beowulf, warrior and chief of a tribe located in the land of Geats. Throughout the text, our protagonist is faced with a plethora of challenges that can prove that he is the prototypical hero on a quest. The idea of the “prototypical hero” is linked back to the book How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster, chapters 1, “Every Trip Is a Quest (Except When It;s Not)” and 10, “Never Stand Next to the Hero”, An example of Beowulf being the structural hero on a quest include there being a dangerous path, a Holy Grail, a dragon, an evil knight, a princess, and, of course, a hero, Other examples include there being a place for the hero to go and a real reason to go, and the companions of the hero always meet a cruel demise.

From this page it is learned that every quester has to have a place to go and a stated reason to go. For our hero Beowulf, the destination for his quest is a lake that is not far from the Heorot hall that Grendel terrorized and his reason to go is to slay the mother of Grendel, who is set to avenge her son’s gruesome injury. After Beowulf defeats Grendel, he begins a trek to a certain lake miles away from the Heorot hall, where he faces the beast that is Grendel’s mother. Once she is defeated, he is rewarded with numerous riches from King Hrothgar.
