I was an eager new intern who wanted to impress my clients and supervisor. I was at times too quick to utilize theory, such as CBT, when I should have just sat with Linda while she shared her story. One moment in our time together that I would change was when Linda was talking about how she has a history of making poor decisions and she could not understand why. I utilized CBT and the down arrow technique and began asking her questions about what making poor decisions means about her. She ended by saying, “I am not a good person.” I spoke to her about automatic thoughts and core beliefs and that she had a core belief about herself that she was not a good person. She started to cry and asked me if she had made all of these mistakes in her life because she thought she was a bad person. In hindsight, it was too soon to talk about core beliefs. Linda was suffering from extreme depression and was not in a stable place. She did not have any positive coping skills in place to recover from acknowledging her core
