Reflection On The Rule Of Reciprocity

1. Do you recall any of your “internal thoughts” while having the conversation? o During the conversation I kept thinking about how uncomfortable I felt talking to someone that I didn’t really know and sharing all this information about myself with them. I was also thinking about whether the person thought I was weird and kept staring at his shirt because it had a lot of things all over it. When all of this internal dialogue was going on inside my head, I had a hard time trying to focus on what he was saying. I realized that even though I was making eye contact, I wasn’t listening to carefully because I couldn’t remember some of the things he just said. Which made it difficult for me to comment or ask questions to expand upon something that he had talked about.

I believe I could have been better at using the Rule of Reciprocity. I gave equal information in response to some questions and didn’t with others. For example, when talking about Hy-Vee he told me about what it was like working at Hy-Vee in a few sentences. In response I said “I worked at Hy-Vee, I started out as a cashier and then I moved to the kitchen department. When I was in the kitchen I didn’t cook anything, most of the food came out of bags. So it couldn’t be that good.” In this example I used the Rule of Reciprocity fairly well by providing an equal amount of information that he gave me. An example, where I didn’t use The Rule of Reciprocity very well is when I shared a little bit about myself after hearing about who he was, “I also have one sibling, a younger brother who goes to a different school than I do. I currently work with kids who have disabilities.” He shared quite a bit of information about himself but I only shared two sentences. I could improve by consciously focusing on using the Rule of Reciprocity
