Schwantes describes servant leaders as individuals who believe in serving others, which will encompass employees, customers, the organization, and others. Servant leadership is a 50-50 commitment between leadership and the organization. Anyone can learn the necessary skills needed to be a servant leader all they have to do is have the initiative to change, be willing to grow, and have the desire to improve their current leadership skills. The ten main characters needed to be a servant leader includes listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and last building a community. Listening is the most important trait a servant leader can have because it builds strength and commitment in all parties involved. Empathy is listening to others and trying to emphasize with where they are coming from. Leaders who are able to recognize opportunities to help make others whole are capable of developing an individual’s skills and emotions through the practice of healing. Awareness is referring to a leader who is self-aware of not only themselves, but also of what is going on around them. Persuasion occurs when leaders are able to convince employees to come to a consensus by using influence they have within the group. Conceptualization happens when a leader is able to find solutions to problems that do not currently exist, by focusing on the long term. The ability to anticipate outcomes of a situation based on lessons learned from experiences is sometimes referred to as foresight.
