John Dewey was a huge supporter for this new form of education. He called on the teachers to be “leaders in building the new society and replacing the corrupt and defeated capitalism of early-twentieth-century America” (Dewey, pg. 206). Progressive education was separated in five different strands being “administrative progressives, who sought consolidated management, militant teachers, who sought a greater role for themselves, child-centered curriculum reformers, advocates of testing and measurement, and political reformers who wanted teachers to help build a better society” (Dewey, pg. 205). Dweck, “With young girls who have very high IQ’s, they don’t cope well with this confusion”(Dwecks, pg.2). Math and science classes enhance a lot of confusion for young girls that cause them to feel unconfident, where for boys this type of confusion only energized them. Young girls starting with low confidence at a very young age in education may be the reason why we have a problem with gender equity in math and science fields in high education and the workplace. Building confidence at a young age may make a difference in females growing up in the math and science fields.
