- Based on the excerpt that I read, it does not take quite long to acknowledge Piper Kerman’s distinctive behavior and personality traits. For starters, she is trying incredibly hard to put up a tough persona, and was failing to maintain it. I am not exactly sure if I can say definitively if Piper deserves her sentence since there is not much information given about it.

For instance, whenever she is asked about her finance, the conversation always ends up leaving her feeling defeated by being told that they will not be able to meet until he is put on the list for visitation and since they are not married it will take a while. Piper comes to the realization that she is going to have to keep her head down, and not make a big fuss so she can be able to pass time quicker.
6. Has reading Orange Is the New Black altered your views of the criminal justice system? Or does the memoir basically confirm what you believed?
- My views regarding the criminal justice system has not shifted at all, as a matter of fact reading Orange is The New Black gave me another example of why the system is flawed. It shows that inmates are still handled with disrespect, as Piper was by the female guard’s coworker.

When inmates are released from their sentences that were over five years long, it is challenging for them to be able to attain a job again if they have a felony charge or other similar charges in which resumes require to know. Also, those who have been prisoners for years on and off have become accustomed to the lifestyle behind bars, they get stuck in a never ending cycle because it has been their life for so long they no longer know how to function responsibility in society
