Fitting-In Reflection

My nine week placement at my CPO, Jacobsen Holdings was a great experience. As a student coming to work in a corporate environment, I felt uncomfortable in the beginning to ‘fit-in’ in this workplace. I only had theoretical knowledge that I learned from AUT but no practical marketing experience. In terms of the task that was given to me, I felt uneasy and worried that I would not be able to identify the issues and making recommendations based on doing market research because not only I was not familiar with the flooring industry, but it is also the industry I did not imagine myself working. It was not an easy first week as I was still getting myself around the work environment but most importantly the flooring products that I had to force myself to learn. As I have noted in my previous report, some of my personal attributes were ‘positive attitude’ and ‘confidence’. However, it took me a few weeks before I became confident in terms of ‘fitting-in’ and maintaining a positive attitude has helped this a lot. Another example was when I first found out about working on a CRM software and using Microsoft Excel a lot was quite scary for me because I am not very good at using excel, yet alone a software that I am not familiar at all. Using the six steps of Marketing Research process helps me achieve my main task as a Marketing Analyst. On my second day at clinical I observed an interaction between a client and two Occupational Therapists (OT) that really emphasised the importance of ‘capacity building’ and how it facilitates ‘empowerment’. A community OT was assessing the client for a new assistive mobility device. During the assessment the community OT directed all his questions to the Gage OT and never specifically asked the client about what she needed or required from the new piece of equipment. The community OT acted like the client was not even in the room; his body language was inappropriate, he sat facing the Gage OT and did not even acknowledge the client the few times she spoke.…

I have chosen to focus on 5.3A because this is an indicator that I plan to focus on next year. This year, I would rate myself a 2.5 out of 4 on this indicator because I feel there is significant room to improve on these practices. Although I have helped student use various resources to create goals for the future, I have not focused on helping them self advocate for the attainment of such nor follow through on these goals throughout the entire year. Many of my students create goals and never make a plan for how they will realistically obtain them. In the future, I hope to encourage students to monitor their goals more closely and help them follow through on said goals throughout the entire year.…

People experience many different kinds of emotions, and in order for people to clearly recognize how other people are feeling, they must ask questions in order to completely understand the situation without causing a large amount of tension. When conflict occurs between two people, one must be careful to not cause additional tension between the two parties. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is through perception checks. The purpose of a perception check is to clarify nonverbal behavior by stating the behavior, giving possible interpretations, then finally listening and paraphrasing what was actually happening. Perception checks helped me to effectively avoid conflict with my family by discovering what was actually going on in…

It is crazy to think about the many different people there are in this world. Some people react to certain situations one way, and others could react in a complete opposite way. Also, certain people are more reserved while others might be more outgoing. The Enneagram Made Easy book describes the different personalities people have. The way it does that is by understanding earlier in life we use our natural abilities to cope with our personal circumstances (Baron & Wagele, 1994, p. 2).…
