Interest and Habits Survey Two assessments were used to obtain knowledge about the interest and practices of Shevaun Smith. The “Getting To Know You” interest assessment, which consists of nine open-ended questions, was administered to obtain a better understanding of Shevaun’s likes and daily routines. Shevaun was asked to read and write a word or phrase to complete each sentence. The findings showed that Shevaun loves to play basketball, but hates playing baseball. He also indicates that he loves his sister who he stated, is the most important person to him. The results showed that incorporating literature on themes related to basketball might increase his interest to participate in the reading test. After administering both assessments, they showed that Shevaun and his friends think reading is boring. It also indicates that Shevaun prefers to read fictional stories about dinosaurs whenever he reads. He also indicates that his favorite book is “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” The results correlate with the findings in the “Tell Me What You Like Assessment” as he indicated that he enjoys reading books that consist of jokes and the Diary of a Wimpy kid fits this satirical and humorous theme. During the assessment, he also indicated that his favorite activity is playing with his sister as opposed to reading a book. According to Shevaun, he doesn’t like reading in school, learning from a book or doing reading workbook pages and worksheets. He scored 26 out of 50 on the recreational reading section of his reading attitude survey and 23 out of 50 on the academic reading section. The scores from the reading attitude test gave him a total of 49 out of 100, which placed him almost midway on the scale. The interview was also used to ascertain parental involvement in the emergent literacy of the child. Open-ended questions concerning his interest, medical and personal information were used to obtain precise results. During the interview, the interviewer asked different questions to probe and get accurate answers about the student. The interview gave me a better understanding of what the child’s interests, strengths, and weaknesses, and family background information. At the onset of the interview, the mother asked that her name, child’s name and address not be used to protect their privacy. I assured her that this information would not be disclosed, but she will get the results of the assessments. I decided to use the name Shevaun Smith for
