The concept between self-selection and teacher direction is the idea that children should be forced to learn a specific material but learning should be based on self-interest which they can later learn on their own pace. Learning shouldn 't be forced because then they 're self-esteem and self-expression won 't grow. The teacher has to think to incorporate both of them in their class. For my classroom I would have free play and centers where they children choose what they want to learn that day. Some children might want to read a book while other want to color which enhances color recognition, and motor skills. In other word I would give those options that will proved an education without them being aware of it. Children become impatient and will stop listening after a few minutes with teacher direction activities. So for the teacher directed activities I would include circle time along with story time. In circle time I would ask children to follow along, participate, singing, dance, and feel free to ask or incorporate ideas. Ex) what day is it today? Do have any ideas of what we can play together outside? Sing a song with movements where the children feel involved and free to participate. Have a doll where the children could choose the outfit of the day based on the weather. I 've seen this in school and everyone is excited to have the chance to choose the outfit. The children can create their own games with the chalk such as hopscotch and tic-tac-toe. Children have to be able to hold the brush/ chalk and manipulate. This requires them to hold and grasp which requires thinking. (See other will want to learn) Since this is an outdoor activity the children will be able to get messy using their feet, hands, and body. When children use chalk they will have to squat which involves balance. The children have to learn to control and hold their own
