a) Critically discuss the benefits of the following database technologies
• Data Mining
• Data Warehousing
What is Data mining?
According to (Jiawei Han, 2011) “We living in a world where vast amount of data are collected daily. Analysing such data is an important need”.
Data mining it is a process to discover patterns in large amount of data and turn data into knowledge
What is the purpose?
The goal of the data mining process is to extract information from a data set and convert it into an understandable structure for further use.
“The objective is the extraction of patterns and knowledge from large amount of data, not the extraction of data itself.” (http://www.zentut.com/data-mining/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-data-mining/, …show more content…
Due privacy issues people are afraid of their personal information can be stolen and use in wrong way. Businesses collect information about their customers to understand their behaviours when they purchasing online. However businesses don’t last forever they can be acquired by others companies or simple gone, and at this time the customers information they own probably is sold to other or leak.
SECURITY ISSUES
Security is a big issue. Companies own private information about their employees and customers including National Social Number, names, addresses, bank accounts and payrolls.
There have been a lot of attacks by hackers and they stooled a big data of customer from big corporations such as Ford Motor Credit Company, Sony etc. with so much financial and personal information available, the credit card stolen and identify thefts start to become a big problem
MISUSE OF INFORMATION/INACCURATE INFORMATION

5. Data flexibility
LAG BETWEEN NEED AND IMPLEMENTATION
Sometime to implemented a new data warehouse can take a very long time, sometimes years from the time a data warehouse as requested till the time it was ready to be used by company users.
COST/BENEFIT
Data warehouse projects encompassing the entire organisation, these projects used to be very expensive sometimes can cost millions and organisations could wait years to see the project implemented.
Only the truly companies could afford them.
Sometimes the price does not enough to justify the implementation.
COMPLEXITY INTEGRATION
For companies, implementations which spanned disparate computer systems and departments could be very complex and time consuming.
DATA OWNERSHIP
Data security it is always a concern.
Even if the implementation is locally the organisations must make sure people are doing the analyses are individuals that organisation trusts specially when dealing with customer personal information.
DATA FLEXIBILITY
Data warehouses trend to have static data with minimal ability to specific solutions. The data is imported and filtered through a schema and it is often older by the time it’s actually used. Also are subjected to ad hoc queries and is very difficult to tune for processing speed and query
