Case Study Aristotle's Pay

Jillian
Salary: $60,000

Justification:

In Aristotle’s eyes, Jillian’s relevant differences would be her experience as a UCP officer for a year, and for work performance, her outside work beneficial to law enforcement for 12 years (studying crime trends, crime mapping, and crime prevention). If Aristotle were distributing the $250,000 among the 5 officers, he would divide it evenly into $50,000 per officer, because Aristotle would assume at first that all the officers are equal. However, Aristotle would fluctuate each officer’s salary based on relevant differences, such as experience, and how the officers perform their jobs. A police officer’s main job is to arrest people who commit crimes that threaten others, and keep the populace safe.

For his efforts, Lawrence should be praised for his work ethic, and the amount of felony/misdemeanor arrests he’s performed. However, Lawrence’s experience working in law enforcement has only begun to grow; he is still on employment probation, and being in the UCP is his first-time job in law enforcement. He also doesn’t have natural strengths in problem-solving and working with others, thus hurting salary potential. For his newly budding experience of 6 months, $10,000 will be deducted from the original $50,000 of an Aristotelian sense. Lawrence’s ability to follow orders without question and his helpfulness towards colleagues is what keeps the salary afloat at …show more content…
If so, give examples and explain why. If not, why not (be detailed).

I would see situations where Aristotle’s definition of justice would’ve been helpful. I feel that community reception is a gray area; Officer Amy was seen as aggressive by the community and colleagues, despite her salary being justified by experience and work performance/accomplishments. While it is good to be known, it’s important to be seen in a positive light, and not someone to be constantly feared. If Aristotle took community reception into account, he would feel as if though Amy has undeserved wealth.

(4) How would Rawls suggest that the salaries should be divided?

Rawls would suggest that the salaries should be divided by community reception. This would benefit Officer Jillian the most because while she performs her job as a law enforcer, she has a very positive standing with the community, despite having not made any arrests yet. However, Rawls’s suggestion would hurt Officer Amy the most, in that she the most aggressive of all the officers labeled by community and colleagues, thus being a candidate for

“Chicago cop cleared in unarmed woman’s shooting death”. Headlines just like this are becoming common in today’s society and the main question that the community asks is “when will justice be served?” Living in a time where the black community keeps getting shot by the police and no consequences occur, we have no choice but to question, what is justice? Similar to the modern society, the one Plato lived in confronted this same question of justice. In this paper I will attempt to explain the view that Plato places before us through Socrates in The Republic as to what is justice and does it “pay” better than injustice in society.…

A Self-Sufficient Friendship Human beings have an intuitive sense when it comes to friendship. It simply seems natural to be in a virtuous relationship with another person. For Aristotle, the conversation deserves more than an assumption of the natural feelings in humans. He introduces the idea of self-sufficiency as a means of attaining happiness, however, there appears to be a contradiction when comparing this to the necessity of friends. He says they are both are required for happiness, but they seem to be fundamentally opposite.…

The City and the Soul The Republic written by Plato in Socratic dialogue is one of the earliest text concerning the subject of justice and forms of government. In the text, Socrates and other Athenians debate on the true meaning of justice. After establishing the premises, Socrates concludes his arguments by praising aristocracy as the best form of government because it is ruled by rational philosopher kings who are just, and critique other forms of government, especially democracy because the desire nature of the human soul rules the city. Today, both forms of government still exist, but democracy seems to be the ideal form of government in the western civilization. To begin, Aristotle defines and contrasts both practical and theoretical wisdom. Practical wisdom is defined by Aristotle as being, “a truthful rational characteristic of acting in matters involving what is good for man” (Aristotle Ethics, pg. 154). In other words, practical wisdom is concerned with deciding what a good course of action for man is. On the other hand about theoretical wisdom, Aristotle writes, “a wise man must not only know what follows from fundamental principles, but he must also have true knowledge of the fundamental principles themselves. Accordingly, theoretical wisdom must comprise both intelligence and scientific knowledge”(Aristotle Ethics, pg. 156).…

Justice has been an evolutionary concept that has been forever evolving for thousands of years. However, in order for the modern deduction of justice to have been made by modern standards, the concept of justice itself needs to be established. Although its formal understanding may have been unclear during their time period, Hesiod and Homer both attempt to understand and exert their opinions as to what justice is through their epic poems and other works. Even though some of their views on justice conflict and others compliment each other, they both laid a foundation to explain what justice meant in Greek society.…
