A. List and describe in detail the three parenting styles described by Baumrind. List and describe the fourth style of parenting style.
Diana Baumrind, a developmental psychologist, conducted research on parenting styles in the 1960s. In the course of her research, she studied 100 pre-school age children from middle class neighborhoods with the goal of evaluating the effect of parenting on child development. Her research introduced the idea of 3 parenting styles: permissive, authoritarian and authoritative. A 4th style called neglectful or uninvolved parenting was later introduced.
The following is a description of each of these styles:

Discuss some of the criticisms of Baumrind parenting styles as discussed in the textbook, using your own words.
Baumrind’s research on parenting styles had numerous criticisms. First of all, her research focused on parenting styles and did not look at other factors such as how a child’s behavior might influence the style. A child’s personality and temperament can certainly influence the way a parent reacts to and ultimately responds to them thus dictating the parenting style.
Secondly, the research was based on only 100 children, a relatively small group. All of these children were from the same area with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. Additionally, there was little cultural or ethnic diversity in the group. Culture and background have a great influence on how we were parented and ultimately how we parent. A parent who comes from a strict culture, like someone of Chinese or African heritage, is more likely to be a stricter parent.
Thirdly, Baumrind tended to focus on the disciplinary methods of each style and the effect it had on children. More recent international research has shown that this is less important than the level of emotional support children receive from their parents. Children who feel unwanted, unsupported or even rejected undergo more suffering that those who have support and nurturing parents despite any disciplinary actions or methods taken by them. This has been shown to be true for every ethnic group around the
