Questioning School Classes

I didn’t start questioning school systems until the second semester of my freshman year of high school. Before then, I just followed along with everything I was told and did what my teachers said. I thought that schools knew what they were doing and by putting us in the classes we were in, schools were setting us up for our success after high school. However, the older I got, I started questioning this belief. Many things started sticking out to me and I realized my freshman year the classes that followed me through the 12 years of school were required classes with little change between them. Almost every class that I had taken since elementary school has been the same class with a little more detail added each year making the classes so-called harder and age appropriate. Schools also don’t take in consideration the amount of time and dedication spent on certain things, like band and sports, outside of school, giving us less time for homework and our day-to-day tasks. Over the years, I’ve learned to understand that things aren’t always fair but there has to be something done about schedules and how teachers go about teaching classes. …show more content…
Author of “I Just Want to Be Average,” Mike Rose relates to my personal experience at school while saying he often “got bored with history” (Rose 185) and his “attention flitted here and there” (Rose 185). I’ve felt this way in the required classes that I struggled through until my senior year where I had more choices and I have a say in my classes. So far, my favorite class, that I got to choose, is Anatomy because it’s a class that I will use for the rest of my life. I will remember this information because it’s something I care about and it will also help me with my soon to be nursing
