Quentin's Movie House: A Short Story

It was a cold night in Linesville Valley. The sky was a very dark blue and calm, with a few sparkling stars. There were no birds chirping, no cars roaming the old streets.
Downtown, many people were in the large Quentin’s Movie House, watching the monster movies Them! and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. Suddenly, a sound was heard. It wasn’t some cheap fifties’ gimmick; it was something real. It was heard by everyone in town. Families tried to adjust the antennae of their static-stricken sets. The people in the theatre took off their red and blue 3D glasses and looked away from the screen and around the theatre at the red, velvet seats and the black walls.
The weird sound started to form something intelligible, some sort of phrase. People made it out as “Tonight.” The scientists at Herbert Wells Observatory, specifically Mr. Marcus and Mrs. Diana Werner, were shocked. With the Werners was their ten-year-old son, Harry.

It was a circular object of unknown diameter, reflecting light at the telescopes, and made of some sort of steel. Suddenly, the object crashed into a desolate field of grass. The city was shaken and then went back to normal. Everyone was in awe. In Quentin’s Movie House, you could hear the cries of “Invaders!” “Martians!” “Flying Saucer!” Everyone dashed to their cars to drive to the field.
At the observatory, Mr. Werner dashed to the telephone and called the army. “Bring in the tanks! We have a real UFO!” he said. Mrs. Werner wanted to stop him. The army wasn’t listening, thinking him to be a
