The next analyzed for this study is the biography that was approved by Lili’uokalani’s Hanai daughter, Lydia, and written in 1982 by Helen G. Allen, The Betrayal of Liliuokalani: Last Queen of Hawaii 1838-1917. Allen’s text builds upon the autobiography because it also utilizes diaries and other personal papers of Lili’uokalani and it expands of Lili’uokalani’s life past the end date of the autobiography. With that said, this biography must be strictly analyzed because Allen utilized sources that no other person could or can access. She also contradicts herself in regards to her sources: on page 277 of the text, Allen states that the Queen stopped writing in her diary in August of 1892 for reasons unknown and that there were no other diaries accessible for study, but on page 376, discusses how the diaries written between 1901 and 1906.…

I’m very sorry that I wasn’t able to send you a letter for the past few years. Since the day I left Alaska, me and many other missionaries went through an unforgiving sea, docked our ship, Uranie on a small bay in Hawai’i island, and right now we’re in the middle of teaching some important things to these Hawaiians. I don’t know if you’ll fully understand, but the reason why I secretly sailed all the way out into the middle of the ocean is, because we missionaries needed to spread our Christianity to Hawai’i. When we landed on the island, all of the Hawaiians were showing most of their skin, the men showed off their big, and humongous muscles to the public throughout the hot sunny day, and they believed in these things called gods. Since I haven’t got a chance to tell you anything about what I’ve been doing, I must as well tell you now.…

Throughout African history the theme of what constitutes a quality leader appears yet again and again. Quality leaders reflect the values of their people. Conversely, immoral leaders personify the negation of these values; they corrupt the society they rule with their venality. In the Mwindo epic two leaders emerge: Shemwindo, whose avaricious desire for power perverts his rule, and Mwindo, a rising leader still learning how to improve. With the epic’s expression of Nyanga values one learns what defines leadership in that society, particularly through showcasing the contrasts between Mwindo and his father and describing Mwindo’s physical and emotional journey.…
