Ants Vs Queen Ants

Most ant species are social insects, living in large cooperative groups called colonies. Two or

more generations may overlap in a colony. These ant colonies are divided into three castes —

males, workers and queens — and each caste perform certain tasks.

making them easily distinguishable. The abdomens of queen ants are larger than those of other

ants, and they possess wing muscles specific to their caste.

species the median workers have disappeared, creating a sharp divide and clear physical

difference between the minors and majors.

Most of the common ant species breed in the same way. Only the Queen and breeding females

have the ability to mate. Some ant nests have multiple queens. The male ants, called drones,

along with the breeding females are born with wings and do nothing throughout their life except

eat, until the time for mating comes.

At this time, all breeding ants, excluding the queen, are carried outside where other colonies of

similar species are doing the same. Then, all the winged breeding ants take flight. Mating occurs

in flight and the males die shortly afterward. The females that survive land and seek a suitable

place to begin a colony. There, they break off their own wings and begin to lay eggs, which they

care for.

The first workers to hatch are weak and smaller than later workers, but they begin to serve the

colony immediately. They enlarge the nest, forage for food and care for the other eggs. This is

how most new colonies

In most laboratory experiments, the negative impact of a slave raid is inflicted upon the host almost immediately (Johnson, 2008). One study performed in a controlled laboratory study found that after seventeen days more than ninety percent of the host colony brood and original workers were lost during a raid performed by the slave—making colony (Johnson, 2008). In the same study, field observations shown that in non—laboratory, free living colonies, the host lost an average of thirty nine percent of their workers among a total of four raids. Slave raids are performed by one species of slave—makers or multiple species. Upon observing free living colonies, Christine Johnson (2008), found in more than half of the trials that a host colony…

In this paper, I will argue that people who should be considered to be altruistic are those who act magnanimously to those outside of their family or general social group. I will use examples such as kin selection, animal altruism, and arguments against psychological egoism to assist in proving my thesis to be true. I will also address a counter argument made by some psychological egoists who believe that due to most people feeling pleasure while doing good things for others, that there are no people only act selfishly. I will reference James Rachel ’s essay “Psychological Egoism” to help enhance my theory that not all acts must be out of self interest.…

Order Hymenoptera, the third-largest order of insects, comprises the sawflies, wasps, bees, and ants. Over 150,000 species are recognized (Janke 2), with many more remaining to be described. Many factors have led to this order’s success, through the development of wings, their immense range of behavioral adaptation, and namely: their highly complex ways of self-defense, mainly those of the biochemical and morphological nature. From the famous “cow-killer” to the range of stings of the Vespidae, to the venom of harvester ants such as the Pogonomyrmex, the Hymenoptera have developed a multitude of tricks for means of survival and defense, namely with their use of venom and stinging apparatuses.…
