The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine if an educational intervention for mental health nurses on assessing assault risk in geriatric psychiatric patients will improve the nurse’s knowledge and assessment of assault risk for this population during their inpatient stay. The PICOT question was as follows: In Registered Nurses working in a geriatric psychiatric unit, will attending a staff training session on assault risk for one hour affect knowledge for patient-on-patient assault risk. The theoretical framework for this DNP project was centered around “Theorists Betty Newman’s systems model focused on the role of the nurse in preventing stress invasion in the patient and the environment which is an important part of mental health well-being” (Newman & Fawcett, 2002). The training was in a paper format and handout was provided by the facilitator and created prior to this training and was the primary source for the contents of the educational training.
Ten registered nurses attended the training and completed the consent, pretest, and post-test. All of the participants were registered nurses with their primary clinical position being in a staff nurse role within a geriatric mental health inpatient unit within the VA project facility. The demographic information identified 40% of the nurses attending the training had 6-10years of nursing experience and about 60% of the participants had between 6- 10 years of mental health experience. The responses to the four pretest/post test questions for this study indicated a statistical difference in the change in knowledge of the nurses from the participant’s posttest mean scores when compared to their baseline pretest mean scores.
