However, chemicals aren’t the only ways to control disease. Quarantine can be a simple way to stop the spread of disease. As Randy Ploetz, a professor of plant pathology, says in his article: “In pathogen-free regions, effective quarantine and exclusion are essential.” Once soil is infected by Panama disease there is no way to remove it (Ploetz). Quarantine can slow the spread but diseases like Panama and Black Sigatoka are easily tracked in on boots, farming equipment or machinery. The Farmer Robert Borsato experienced an outbreak of Race Four first hand in Darwin Australia. “The government tried to put in a quarantine. You couldn't move equipment around. There were footbaths to wash your shoes in,” he describes in the article (Peed). But even with the quarantine many farmers ended up having to change crops. Quarantine ended up being an ineffective solution. There is one solution that would seemingly solve the problem of banana diseases for good; however, the common consumer will likely not support it. We continually use the same method of cultivation for bananas even when shown the disastrous effects. This shows that businesses in the food market often take the easier route when it comes to farming. Instead of finding a long term solution businesses chose the less difficult path and deal with repercussions if they ever come. This is not a solid practice. Unless we want bananas and other crops to go extinct periodically we need to find a solution that involves more than just cultivating a new variety of banana and spraying it with fungicide. Finding a solution, however is difficult. It will take time effort and planning. If businesses tend to go with the easier short term solution then this problem will never be fixed. Science has shown that there are solutions to the banana problem if we are willing to look for
