Characteristics Of Quantitative Research

For instance, a quantitative research will gather, calculate, and measure the population at a university to determine how many university male students dropped out of the university after their freshman year. Furthermore, the information that a quantitative research gathers is much larger in number compared to a qualitative research. (Naik, (2010) Another type of characteristic in a quantitative research is control. Control is a factor in a quantitative research that is unique in its characteristic because it allows researchers to identify the reason for their observations. Also, experiments are performed in an attempt to answer certain questions such as, “why something happens, what causes some event to happen, or under what conditions an event does occur.” Control is necessary in order to supply clear answers to the quantitative researcher’s questions. Furthermore, “the results acquired from qualitative research have a better chance of being biased because this method of research is open to different analysis.” (Naik, 2010)
Some believe that a qualitative research is more trustworthy because the researchers put in more effort in gathering the data, while others believe that quantitative method is more trustworthy “as larger part of the universe is subjected to research.” (Naik, 2010)
Although quantitative and qualitative research is different, researchers should work together for one common goal, and that is to conduct a good, ethical research project. Each research project has its unique needs and will sometimes need both qualitative and quantitative methods to conduct a successful research. But, both qualitative and quantitative research is based on assumptions, and both when carried out accurately provide good
