Quandaries Of Representation Mona El Ghobasy Analysis

Having a point of view is what makes people unique, most importantly; our experiences with point of view and perception allows us to judge things around us on our own account. In the article, “Quandaries of Representation”, by Mona El-Ghobasy, El-Ghobashy puts the audience into her personal point of view, as we are allowed to follow her through situations that support her argument on representation that affects how society views her as an individual, as well as a role model to a religious group. El-Ghobashy uses strong personal experiences that allow the audience to develop an idea of her point, however, with the insufficient statistics on the concrete facts that representation affects others that are victim to similar circumstances, the argument …show more content…
Furthermore, the article develops a theme, more or so a pattern, that El-Ghobashy creates to set the tone using encounters. For example, on page 482, we begin to go through a series of repetition, starting paragraphs off with, “Once, on the N Train…” and, “Once in a subway…” that usually deal with her experiences on public transportation. The argument becomes very one sided, it doesn’t reach perspectives on different aspects of these stereotypes. Certainly if El-Ghobashy mentioned experiences from others that resemble and deal with her similar struggles she faces on subway trains and platforms, then the article can build a foundation that convinces the audience that more than one person has dealt with this

On the Subway focuses on a male and a female on the subway. The female is Caucasian and the male is African American, in this poem the Caucasian female is evidently fearful of the African American male riding on the train with her; “he could take my coat so easily, my briefcase---my life”. Olds uses the dashes and commas to enhance the poem. The narrator compares the two; the Caucasian woman is wearing expensive fur, while the African American man is wearing red “like the inside of a body exposed”. Olds uses simile and imagery to describe the two.…

There is hope for a better reality of Americans when the few come together as a group, exposing themselves and others, and the documentaries Tough Guise 2 and Miss Representation speak to men and women and how they can change their bad gender image sold to them by the media. Tough Guise 2 observes men bred by the media to be leaders in America’s violent crimes. Miss Representation observes the role the entertainment industry plays in defining gender roles, but takes a closer look at what women can do to fight gender inequality in political spectrums where their positive example is lacking in areas where males predominate, and therefore attempts to do something about gender representation. Without diverse input from men outside the realm of the most famous, both documentaries miss an opportunity to reach an audience of men that could use their power to stand up against the plight of gender misrepresentation in the media.…

Vision Strong “Miss Representation” is a documentary film by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who illustrates the way media portrays women and the issues that come along with this portrayal in the face of young girls while trying to expose it. In order for Newsom to get her point across she had to build a strong claim. The documentary sheds light on the portrayal of women and helps build a stronger claim on how this portrayal is wrong by sharing her story, using the stories of young girls who have had issues because of this portrayal, using visuals, and facts from successful women. In the opening of the documentary Newsom begins by saying how she found out she was pregnant with a girl and how the pregnancy made her see clearly.…

In the 2011 Miss Representation documentary, directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, it discusses the limited, but also degrading portrayals of women that mainstream media and culture produce. Newsom graduated from Stanford University with a Master’s degree in Business Administration and is a CEO, actress, filmmaker, and advocate. As a woman and an actress, she presents her belief that media is a huge contributor in making women feel powerless by providing several examples to deliver her message. Newsom effectively convinces the audience of Miss Representation that media under-represents women through the use of emotional appeals, appealing to credibility, and by including a counterargument but then refuting it.…

After viewing the documentary of “Miss Representation” I found that the message this documentary was sending its viewers was that the media sells the idea that women are visualized and praised for their beauty, sexuality and youth rather than their intellectualism and leadership skills. “Miss Representation” exposes the ugly truth behind the media and politics towards women. I found this documentary to be persuasive and successful in bringing awareness to both men and women, of what the “normal “everyday women goes through and the pressure they attain because of the media by the following supported claims. This documentary highlights the importance of what is advertised through the media and how it affects us, the many different statistics…

Power, oppression, and privilege are all complex ideologies. Throughout the semester, we have examined many forms of media including books, films, and scholarly articles that discuss these three ideologies. In particular, we watched Taiye Selasi’s Ted Talk called “Don’t Ask Where I’m From, Ask Where I’m a Local”. The main point of this ted talk was to learn something about yourself. She discusses the three R’s that shape her life: Rituals, Relationships, and Restrictions.…

I first became familiar with the relationship between feminism and disability when I was assigned reading from the anthology Feminist Disability Studies. With essays from writers such as Rosemarie Garland-Thomson and Alison Kafer, it is an incredibly powerful collection, demonstrating how the interests of feminist theory and disability studies overlap. And yet, despite the efforts of these scholars and disabled feminists in academia and in activist groups, disability does not seem to be on the broader feminist agenda. Similar to the Garland-Thomson and Kafer essays we read, I hope to make the case as to why a specifically feminist focus on disability within academia and activism is not taking away from the current feminist movement, and in…

Gone But Not Forgotten Elie Wiesel once said, “We must not see any person as an abstraction. Instead, we must see in every person a universe with it’s own secrets, with it’s own treasures, with it’s own sources of anguish, and with some measure of triumph”. In the novel The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, the Lacks family is viewed as an abstraction both by the scientific community, and the media; however, Rebecca Skloot did not view them as an abstraction, and she made it her duty to discover the truth, and publish it in a way that the public would have access to it wherever they are. The Lacks family is viewed as an abstraction by the science community and the media in a variety of ways. The first of these ways is…

Stephen Covey once said, “Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs.” In this quotation, Covey explains that once you determine your beliefs and what you stand for, use your voice to inspire others to do the same. The same concept applies in the two works “Ain’t I A Woman” by Sojourner Truth and “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou. The main focus of these pieces is about women taking action and using the power of their voice to change the living for women and the levels of society. Analyzing these two works reveals a message that a woman’s voice is strong enough to raise the moral standards of how society views women.…
