Quality TV Shows

The worst insult you could give to Barney Rosenzweig, the executive producer of Cagney & Lacey, was to tell him that his work was "too TV.” Twin Peaks was universally praised by critics for being "unlike anything we'd ever seen on television." In a medium long considered artless, the only artful TV is that which isn't like all the rest of it. Quality TV breaks rules. It may do this by taking a traditional genre and transforming it, as Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, and Moonlighting did to the cop show, the doctor show, and the detective show, respectively. Or it may defy standard generic parameters and define new narrative territory heretofore unexplored by television, as did thirtysomething and Twin

Rhetorically Analyzing a Controversial Matter Parents are often telling their children to “turn off the TV and go outside” due to the belief that TV does nothing to stimulate growth and development. Society agrees with the views of the common parent; television sedates the mind rather than engages it. Steven Johnson, a credited author, challenges this controversial topic, arguing that more complex TV shows actually require intellectual labour. However, the successfulness of Johnson’s argument can be rhetorically analyzed through his target audience and his use of mode, style, tone, and the three rhetorical appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos.…

Reading Pages Report: “Signs of intelligent Life on TV” Summary Susan Douglas’s “Signs of Intelligent Life on TV” discusses the emergence of feminism and the presence of intelligent, powerful, and hardworking women on TV. Douglas discusses how in some shows the writers will present female characters that defy gender stereotypes, however there are still signs of cultural bias against women in these shows. She acknowledges that in these three shows: NYPD BLUE, ER and Chicago Hope the writer acknowledges the significance of adult female audiences by including women as ongoing characters who work for a living, well-educated and strong.…

Jack R. Poppele once said,“Television’s future is as expansive as the human mind can comprehend.” This is true considering the enormous advances that have been made in the television industry, since Philo Farnsworth first demonstrated it to the public in 1927. In 1945 it was estimated that there were less than 10,000 television sets in American households, which later rose to 52 million sets in 1960. Nowadays 96.7 percent of Americans have a television in their household, and the average American watches 5 hours of TV a day. Television has swiftly changed American culture in extreme ways, along with impacting the views of politics, education, and entertainment.…

They are a function of the mediocrity of the medium. Not for nothing has television been described as a "vast wasteland. " TV, with the unique pressures of its weekly schedule and the need to appeal to a mass audience, has always tended toward banality. In the effort to supply escapist entertainment, it has relied heavily on the mindless, the unchallenging, and the consciously non provocative.…

The programs Black Mirror, Total Drama, and Galavant were used to depict the amount of violence presented in a drama, animation, and comedy for this experiment. Black Mirror, an hour-long show, is a modern take on The Twilight Zone on how technology brings the worst in human nature. Total Drama is an animated half-hour spoof of reality television competition in the vein of Survivor, except the contents are teenagers and set at a summer camp but with all the same antics. Galavant, a half-hour musical comedy set in the Medieval Era, contains the humor styling of Monty Python. Due to the differences in genres, there should be a varying amount of aggression shown in each.…

Hi Adrià, I’ve seen previously the programme that you refer. In my opinion, this programme is one of the American TV programmes based on the idea of the change of a situation undesirable or chaotic that a coach makes reversible. Around this idea or concept you could find many programms like: Nightmare Kitchen with the Spanish version of “Chicote” or others where the problem isn’t a business. I think, for example, in “Ajuste de cuentas” or “Supernanny”. In the first one a coach gives you solutions to adjust and control your domestic economy , whereas in the second one a coach teach you how educate your children.…

In Computer Science, we are focussed on creating new things/new solutions, so the discipline can be appropriately referred as…

Defining genres for television shows has always been a difficult task, and the sheer amount of shows airing today makes this process even tougher. Not only are there hundreds of shows that are prevalent in network television, but due to the rise in popularity of streaming sites such as Netflix, there are also many shows that get their start on these sites without ever premiering on TV. This saturation in the market of TV shows has obviously produced many different genres of TV shows, and the number of networks and mediums for consumption has allowed for experimentation. This experimentation is not entirely original, however, as many “breaking-edge” shows often borrow aspects from other successful shows, causing a mish mash of genres. All of…

In our current times, a growing trend in entertainment is a work of art’s ability to be “Meta”. Meta is an adjective referring to a work of art’s ability to be self-referential; in other words, to be aware of itself and its genre. This has also be described as “Hanging a Lampshade” or “Breaking the Fourth Wall”. A few notable examples of Meta works in modern art include television series such as 30 Rock (2006), Family Guy (1999) and Community (2009), or movies such as Scream (1996) or Cabin in the Woods (2011). This fascination with being self-aware stems from the audience’s ability to be “in on the joke” so to speak; are you sick of sequels that never live up to the original?…
