Tamar Lifeboat Quality Plan

Great Essays
Introduction
This is quality plan for a ruggedized computer system to be used in Tamar lifeboat. This system consists of CPU, screen, keyboard and mouse. It uses methods such as quality function deployment (QFD), failure mode effects analysis (FMEA), reliability analysis, quality standards, ergonomics and redundancy to establish the quality of the system. Furthermore, it seeks to establish if the system fulfils the requirements of the customers.
Customer Specifications
The customer requires the rugged computer system to operate in a salt environment without elements of corrosion. Besides, the component of the system should be water resistant (splash proof). Since lifeboats are used in the rough seas and in environments with extreme temperatures

This also means that the reliability of this system will be lower than the reliability of the component with the least reliability. Moreover, as more components are added to this system, its reliability will decrease.
Mean Time before Failure (MTBF)
Due to the improved wear-levelling algorithms, the rugged computer system is able to withstand intense vibration and shock environments. Besides, it is able to survive the severe environmental hazards common to lifeboats. This means that it has higher MTBF (100,000 hours and above) compared to personal computers (30,000-50,000 hours).
Quality Standards
Several statutory specifications apply to this system. A good example of such a statutory specification is the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). According to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), EMC is ability of a system to function in an acceptable manner in its electromagnetic environment without introducing unbearable electromagnetic disturbances to that

1 University of the People Unit 5 Written Assignment Analyze the report and present a summary, in your own words, of the failures and your comments on them. A preliminary investigation of flight data showed: nominal behavior of the launcher up to H0 36 seconds; failure of the back-up Inertial Reference System followed immediately by failure of the active Inertial Reference System; swiveling into the extreme position of the nozzles of the two solid boosters and, slightly later, of the Vulcain engine, causing the launcher to veer abruptly; self- destruction of the launcher correctly triggered by rupture of the links between the solid boosters and the core stage. The origin of the failure was thus rapidly narrowed down to the flight control system…

In Garrett Hardin’s “Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poor”, Hardin argues about “a world that must solve real and pressing problems of overpopulation, hunger and moral duty.” Hardin sets the stage by first giving his analysis on the structure of the world today by describing the earth as a lifeboat rather than a spaceship. He then dives into how population control, the tragedy of the commons and immigration are some of the main reasons for the problems we have today. Hardin argues that simply helping people and giving charitably will not solve these problems. Peter Singer, in “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” seemingly goes against Hardin by saying that “if it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening, without thereby…
