The purposes of assessments are to support learning, identify special needs, evaluate a program, monitor trends, and serve high stakes accountability requirements (Guddemi, Case, 2004). To make an assessment meaningful for both the educator and the student, then they need to be quality assessments. Quality assessments will help the educator see where a child is at and then be able to implement strategies to help that child grow. Some examples of these would include: observations, running records, portfolios, standardized tests, anecdotal records, diagnostic assessments, and developmental screenings.
