Community College Student Qualities

QUALITIES OF A SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT Since I stepped on the land of United States last December, I have been in the College of San Mateo for two semesters. Along with my studying here, I have had a deeper understanding of the qualities of a successful community college student. Unlike the courses in my high school in China where all the students are concentrated in a same class and taught by the same teachers, the courses in community college here are more flexible because the distribution of majors generates the flow among different courses. Community college students won’t be limited in a certain class anymore. Hence, I have to adapt to this relatively different study environment. Acquiring study skills is the most important quality of a successful community college student. As a community college student, you have to be more comprehensive to face the multiple disciplines and acquire as most the knowledge as you can in a relatively short period. In some science disciplines, study skills play a more important role than the other disciplines. In my opinion, understanding rather than memorizing concepts is particularly critical in the science disciplines. For example, I was always trying to take notes as specific as I can in the class and memorize every formula; but the time of taking notes influences me to catch up the thinking of professor. Besides, the test is so variable that it differs a lot from the samples in the textbook. Later on, I tried to catch up with the thinking of professor rather than take notes. Thus, I have a better understanding of the concepts. It is essential for a good student to understand the concepts well. Outstanding study skills are pretty important for a successful community college
