The text, Servant Leadership, by Robert K. Greenleaf, is a fascinating book that outlines the aspects of a true leader. In relation to my summer internship at Fortress Bank, formerly known as First State Bank of Illinois, I took on the roll of a leader. More importantly, I took on the roll of a servant leader as I become a team player that was a vital cog in the running of the company. Throughout this essay, I will compare and relate the aforementioned text to my summer experience. I enjoyed the author’s dialogue regarding community as I felt that it was comparable to Fortress Bank’s recent rebranding.…

Professor, The book Servant Leadership has been extremely eye opening. I understand that while I may consider myself a leader, I still have a long journey in becoming a servant leader that is capable of serving both others and myself first. I realize that while I have some leadership and entreprenurial skills already, none are truly perfected. Specifically, while my initiative is strong and I am very tenacious, our exercise in class involving placing ourselves on the tenacity scale, made me realize that I can always do more.…

After reading chapter 12, and analyzing the different leadership styles I would have to say my leadership style is servant leadership, with a mix of task-oriented behaviors and people-oriented leader behaviors – depending on the situation. I’m a people person, and love helping people. I’m a motivator, and I like to try to make people’s jobs easier. As a leader I see myself as serving the needs of my team, to provide them the right tools for them to get their job done, and to help them actually enjoy their job. I’m all about helping people to figure out their goals, help them to achieve those goals, and help them through hard times.…

The idea of servant leadership was modeled after Jesus’ example here on Earth. To me, servant leadership is the passionate pursuit of one’s God-ordained mission accompanied by the mentality and heart to service their followers in hopes of fulfilling a grander vision. Based off of the principles found in Jesus on Leadership, I was able to develop this definition and explore the depth of what it means to be a servant leader in the world today. The servitude aspect of servant leadership begins when an individual submits to the will of the Father and adopts the Lord’s call on his or her life. This calling transforms into a “mission” where one is pursuing his or her passion through the median of service—not personal agendas (p.18).…

The principles of servant leadership consist of listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of others, and the ability to build a community (Spears, 2010). As a charge nurse of my unit, I am a servant leader who applies all these principles in my daily life. I listen to my coworkers patiently and become aware of the issues they are facing in their professional and personal lives. This awareness makes me empathize with them. The empathy would allow me to persuade them to take the right steps towards the healing process.…

Being a leadership minor, I already have my leadership philosophy that i feel fits hand in hand with my coaching philosophy. Since I was in elementary school, I knew that I was a leader on the court and in the classroom. . It started at the age of 5 with being apart of my first AAU basketball team, all the way to mentoring kids at leadership camps. I always stood up for what I believed and fought for my voice to be heard not only for myself but also my peers. Something that stuck with me throughout the years is the idea of being a servant leader.…

While looking through the resources provided for this section it was interesting to see Bommelje quoting Robert Greenleaf, where he says a servant leader seeks first to serve, “then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.” That was very profound because if I look back at my career to where I am now, becoming a leader was a natural step. My desire to serve others moved me toward a leadership role, where I could be a mentor to others and a student to those that I respect and seek knowledge and mentorship. One thing I have discovered about myself is…
