Traits of Good Employee In looking for an employee to hire, the requirements are surprisingly uniform. In a recent survey by CareerBuilder, they found that 77% of employers consider soft skills (the more common, personality-based attributes) to be as important as hard skills (the job specific, learned abilities) and 16% said soft skill were actually more important (Poll). Though experience is valuable, experience alone will not land the desired job. No matter the industry, there are five general attributes that make a good employee. The first two traits depend on the way an employee relates to their work. They need to qualified, but they also need to fit into the environment. 72% of employers agree that a positive attitude improves the environment and the productivity of colleagues (Poll). A positive attitude can uplift the culture of a company and happy employees breed higher productivity and cooperation. A good employee’s job is to foster that contented culture, and if need be, even help to create it themselves. Along with this positivity, the employee must be confident. Confidence keeps productivity high and “encourages employees to take on challenges that others shy away from” (Sundheim). If an employee is confident in their own abilities and confident in the company, then that only bolsters the tenacity of everyone else. No one is going to be passionate or dedicated to something they do not believe in and they certainly will not utilize their own skills if they do not feel assured about their abilities. Thus, a good employee not only believes in themselves, but in the work they are taking part in. Also, with a positive outlook and confidence, a good employee is able to express their opinions while creating a comfortable workspace where everyone is able to collaborate, even in the face of disagreements (Daum). It is rare to be a part of a company where there is no interaction between colleagues, so these personality traits are essential to the continuation of a happy and healthy work
