Overview As nurses, we all remember what it was like during our first year as nursing students. It is a time of excitement, fear, and wondering if we can really become a nurse in the end. The first year as a nursing student is critical in preparing students to be successful throughout their program, gain skills to help them take on more responsibility, and manage themselves effectively (Porteous & Machin, 2017). Porteous and Machin (2017) set out to study this important first year in students' journeys through their nursing program.

The question addressed in the article is as follows: "How do undergraduate nursing students perceive their experiences of the transition into higher education and nursing profession (Porteous & Machin, 2017)?" Research questions in qualitative research are linked to paradigms and research traditions within paradigms (Polit & Beck, 2017). Porteous and Machin's research was conducted using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach (Porteous & Machin, 2017). Hermeneutics is a research tradition in qualitative research, which focuses on the lived experiences of humans and how they interpret them (Polit & Beck, 2017). This research is closely linked to the constructivist paradigm where old ideas and structures are broken down and put back together in new ways (Polit & Beck, 2017). Constructivist research concentrates on understanding the human experience as it is lived, usually with narrative and subjective data (Polit & Beck, 2017). Generally speaking, qualitative research is flexible, ongoing, holistic, and may involve multiple data collection strategies (Polit & Beck, 2017).
