The research database utilised for this assignment will be the Liverpool John Moore's electronic library ‘Discover’ this will enable me to access various databases of which include EBSCO: CINAHL, Medline, Scopus and Inter-nurse. The search terminology used items such as Qualitative and quantitative research studies and the key words used were “pain management”, “nurses approach to pain”, “knowledge and barriers to post-operative pain including nurse and patient views”. A manual search was also applied to help find the grey literature to support the research articles chosen for this assignment. As pain is a subjective experience and individually unique from one person to another. A method presently used in medical research is the focus group, this gives us opinions by generating data from our own observations and responses obtained by using questions. (Morse, 2015). Therefore, a qualitative method by Mackichan et al (2015) is required which will focus on various healthcare professional’s views and experiences of patient’s in pain
According to Dyson and Norrie (2010) qualitative methodology seeks to understand the participants point of view as large groups are not necessary as the aim is to not generalise or infer from the findings, rather the aim is to understand from the individual’s phenomenon of interest. However, according to (Ellis, 2106) qualitative research has been criticised for lacking scientific rigour and credibility because the processes involved are of subject to the value and beliefs of the person undertaking the
