Person vs society conflict is a dominant conflict that all of the characters must face throughout Whale Talk. The quote above is a demonstration of how each of the characters contrast from what society accepts, and therefore the conflicts that each of them face. The most significant conflict faced by the Cutter High School Swim Team is that of the closed-minded discrimination of students to their peers who are different. Because of the fact that there are characters who discriminate against others, T.J. feels as though it is not fair for the jocks to get all the recognition and attention.…

Although, keeping a large Orca in a tank can result in emotional abuse, and lead to self harm inflicted by the whale. World renowned animal rights activist, Jane Goodall, explained that, “whales and dolphins communicate with sonar-like sound waves. Keeping them confined in tanks means those sound waves bounce off of the walls and echo back, creating...an "acoustical hell" for the animals” (Rooney, 1). The lack of ocean current and deep depths can also create a collapsed dorsal fin-- a rare condition for wild Orcas. Although, almost all of captive Orcas display collapsed dorsal fins.…

Not many people think about what goes on behind these said shows. What we don't think about is the torture, maltreatment and even forced insemination that goes on in these “wonderful” places. Captured from the wild In the open ocean, orcas are smart, cooperative creatures. They work together to find food, survive, and even share very complex bonds in their matrilineal groups.…

They are able to accurately distinguish between different objects by making different clicking sounds and focusing the beam of the clicks they produce (Knight, 2012). Cetaceans are one of only three groups that vocalize with multiple dialects dependent on geographic location. Other groups are both bats and humans (Filatova, et al., 2012). False killer whales produce three types of sounds for communication: echolocation sounds, fast pulsing sounds, and tonal whistles (Yuen, Nachtigall, Breese, & Vlachos, 2007). A study shows that commercially available echo sounders can be heard by marine mammals including false killer whales from hundreds of yards away which could affect the behavior of the false killer whales (Deng, et al., 2014).…

People have learned to love the black-and-white marine icon that has been rehabilitated from a fearsome killer to the cuddly water panda they’ve become. Groc’s article, “Orca Encounters”, sparked my interest and led me to question just how humane our social and cultural traditions have become. Once killed by fishermen and believed to be a dangerous creature, the orca has grown to become the most viewed performer at SeaWorld shows. Being the largest predator held in captivity, researchers have proven that these powerful creatures are ill-served by public exhibition. Factly, orcas do no adjust to nor belong in captivity.…

The film, Blackfish, was a phenomenal movie; it convinced and informed the public, that orca whales in captivity should be free, by the using the art of persuasion. A plethora of persuasive rhetoric was evident throughout the duration of the film. It is clear orcas should stay in the ocean since they are killing more people when captive. In addition, killer whales are better off in the wild since they are cruelly captured and handled by humans. The motion picture used an exceptional variety of techniques known as ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade the public that whales so not belong in captivity.…
