Pythagoras was born in 570 BCE on the island of Samos in Greece. He was the son of Mnesarchos and Pythais. Pythagoras was a Greek mathematician, philosopher, and the founder of the Pythagorean brotherhood. He spent his early years traveling throughout Egypt, learning about mathematics. After his travels, Pythagoras settled in a Greek colony in southern Italy named Croton. Pythagoras founded the Brotherhood of Pythagoreans which was a group dedicated to mathematics. Pythagoras is most known for the founding of the Pythagorean Theorem.
The Brotherhood of Pythagoreans was founded after Pythagoras settled in Croton. This very secretive group had its own symbols, prayers, and rituals. His followers gave up everything to live in a commune with other …show more content…
But, he is said to have sacrificed 100 oxen after the completion of his theorem. The Pythagorean Theorem is a geometric proof for finding a missing side of a triangle. The theorem (a^2+b^2=c^2) is frequently used in the real world in jobs that involve construction, installation, and production. Using this theorem, you can also create a Pythagorean Spiral which is a spiral made up of continuous right triangles.
Pythagoras found the existence of numbers. People in this time thought that a number could not just exist. For example, they thought that in order to have the number five you would have to have five of something. Pythagoras found that all numbers existed and that they didn’t have to have a physical object affiliated with it to be real.
Pythagoras also found irrational numbers. He discovered that in a triangle with two of the sides equal to one, that the other side would have to be the √2. The discovery of irrational numbers was shocking to the Pythagoreans due to the fact that they believed the world was built using ratios and whole
