For example if you had Iron Oxide and Silver, if you caused a displacement reaction then you would have Iron and Silver Oxide. In normal reactions, the atoms rearrange to form the products by mixing with each other. So again, if you had Iron and you caused a combustion reaction, the oxygen from the flame would be mixed with the Iron, creating Iron Oxide. Instead of writing an elements name whenever you reference it, you can just use the name for it in the Periodic Table (Eg. Magnesium=Mg, Silver=Au.). For compounds, you can say how many atoms it has in it of each element. Mixtures are different to elements and compounds because a mixture is made from molecules of elements and compounds that are simply mixed together, without chemical bonds. The combustion of metals is different to the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels because if you make a combustion reaction with hydrocarbon fuels, you create Co2 and particles of Carbon that are usually seen as soot or smoke.
