Pycnopodia Helianthoides, which is known as the sunflower seastar, is an extraordinary star fish found in the northeast Pacific. It is one of the largest sea stars in the world, and has a maximum arm-span of 1m (Lambert, 2001). This intertidal organism has many amazing traits that most other sea stars do not possess. I will discuss these unique characteristics throughout my essay.

Sunflower seastars have 16 to 24 limbs and are radially symmetrical. It is also the heaviest known sea star on the planet weighing about 5kg. Their arms can grow up to 40 cm long and they are around 80 cm in diameter. The colours can vary giving the seastar a beautiful appearance. They range from reddish-orange to yellow, violet brown, or slatey purple (Aherne and Benhnke, 1991). They are predatory, usually feeding on sea urchins, snails, clams, and other small organisms. The sunflower seastar inhabits low sub tidal and intertidal areas with an abundance of seaweed or kelp (Esquivel, 2003). This particular sea star can move more rapidly because it possesses a very flexible body due to the aboral skeletal plates being loosely connected to each other (Lawrence, 1987)

These suctions cups are extremely strong. Strong enough that the suction cups can break away from the seastar and stay clung on the Rock, a useful and interesting trait of the sunflower seastar (Telnack,

A kind of splendidly hued ocean slug has a preference for infinitesimal marine animals called zooplankton, and it feeds on them utilizing a technique that has never been seen: It catches them in a swallow by utilizing an agent. The ocean slug's clueless partners are hydroid polyps — tiny, coral-like creatures that live in colonies and feed on zooplankton. The ocean slug, known as a nudibranch (pronounced nooda-brank), regards the polyps as living fishing nets, energetically scooping them up and gulping them down when the hapless hydroids complete their zooplankton dinner.…

Balistes capriscus is a cartilaginous teleost of the Balistidae family. A dull grey, this species of triggerfish is relatively unattractive compared its brightly coloured relatives; the Queen triggerfish and the Bluespotted triggerfish. Like other reef fish they are highly compressed with a bright white line extending from its mouth to the anal fin, dividing the darker gray dorsal side and the light gray ventral side (Hauter & Hauter, 2015). The darker patterning on the lateral side of their body can be speckled, bars, or hardly visible (Hauter & Hauter, 2015). Their bottom jaw is exceptionally pale compared to the rest of their body and their eyes are set within a pale blue rim (Hauter & Hauter, 2015).…

The sea swallow, scientifically known as Glaucus atlanticus, is one of the oddest creatures the ocean has to offer. Technically a type of sea slug, it floats on the surface upside-down, with its belly (or “foot”) and mouth facing toward the sky. It has the appearance of a tapered cross with six arms instead of two, each arm culminating in a burst of short radiating tentacles, cetera, which give the impression of feathered wings. Most of its body is a bright silvery blue, while a richer navy colors the two silver stripes that run down its center and the tips of its cetera. Its appearance, overall, has proven quite striking --…

Have you ever wondered what adaptations allow deep-sea creatures to survive in extreme environments? There is no simple answer due to the fact that all creatures adapt to their environment in different ways. Although sea creatures live together in the same ocean, the condition in different areas varies. The different characteristics of these four sea creatures make them unique, therefore giving them various ways to adapt to extreme oceanic environments in order to survive. Despite living in different locations of the ocean, zombie worms, giant squids, yeti crabs, and deep-sea jellyfish all share one common trait: they must adapt to their environment to survive.…
