This is a viewpoint about the capsizing of Pura Vida Princess, a 100 foot catamaran vessel, which sank near the coast of Punta Leona. The vessel is owned by Global Crust Firm S.A. According to the report of an online news site, The Tico Times, the ship left Herradura Bay on 8th of January and on its way across the Gulf of Nicoya. During the departure, the sea was calm but within 30 minutes after, at about 2040H, the ship had called for a distress call but it rapidly sank due to strong winds and rough sea. The vessel was said to be on an all-inclusive day adventure to Tortuga Island from Jaco. Total number of passenger was on about 96 with its 10 manned crew. The Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) has decided that negligence is not to blame. According to OIJ Spokeswoman Paola Madrigal as she told the Tico News Times via an email, “The conclusion that the OIJ gave to the prosecutor in Garabito [a Pacific coast canton that includes Jacó, near where the Pura Vida Princess sank] was that there was no indication, evidence or witnesses indicating that the cause of the shipwreck was negligence or damages to the ship, rather, she said, it was due to “natural causes”.”
But for some, the investigation may be somewhat disappointing to them. Like what one of the survivor of the vessel, Patterson, said that “I find that hard to fathom, we would like to see someone take accountability for this. There had to be errors on someone’s part for us to be in that situation to begin with.”
