Putting a Price Tag on Human Dignity

As I was walking down to downtown Brooklyn on a Saturday night, I noticed a few girls in the corner of a bar just anxiously waiting for somebody to pick them up. I’m not sure if they are victims of Human Trafficking but I definitely saw some red flags. For instance, I noticed that the girls looked like they were beaten because of the bruises on their arms and legs but who knows, I might be wrong. Also, I found it to be awkward for the girls to be wearing small skirts on 20 degree weather and carrying two cellphones. However I can’t judge someone on how they may look and therefore I may be incorrect. Although I saw these red flags, I didn’t do anything because I didn’t want to contact the police for something

What I saw intrigued me on how many women I witnessed in these past couple of years doing similar things that the women I witnessed on that Saturday night. Not only I encountered this in Brooklyn but I encountered this in Manhattan, Queens, Long Island, and the Bronx. I came across a story in the internet and the title says “I was raped 43,200 times”. As I was scrolling down the article, I noticed that the girl’s name is Karla Jacinto and she said she was involved with human trafficking. She reported before she got involved with human trafficking, she was often getting abused along with getting rejected by her own mother. That was the reason why she left her home and hoped to find a better life with a man, but that didn’t turn out the way she wanted. In fact, it may be the worse decision she had ever made in her life. Karla Jacinto didn’t expect the man she loved forced her to be a prostitute and get raped 30 times a day, 7 days a week, for 4 years straight. She was not only forced to have sex she was also get beat up, take drugs, and would often starve to death. Not only in Mexico this is a problem but it’s a problem in the whole world. It’s ruining million of other people’s lives because almost nothing can be done to stop the people from purchasing these innocent victims and making them do inhumane work for …show more content…
An average age that would be sent for human trafficking is 13 years old and the average cost of a human is only 90 dollars, so if you really think about it almost everyone can afford these innocent people and use them as a money machine by forcing them to do agriculture, working at restaurants, as well as prostitution. Yet, I can see why this is a problem that still grows knowing that people in poor countries have to sell their children to get money. As well as how lots of families are abusing their kids almost forcing them out of the house, making them going out in the real world without any knowledge of what people might do to them and unfortunately some of them get involved with Human

Unfortunately, these children often fall vulnerable to a traffickers’ tactics as they are often on the run due to difficult situations at home and many have been exposed to physical, sexual, emotional, and/ or extreme poverty (Adelson, 2008). There are multiple factors that may make a child vulnerable to becoming a victim of sex trafficking: age, poverty, sexual abuse, family substance abuse and physical abuse, individual substance abuse, learning disabilities, loss of a parent or caregiver, runaway, sexual identity issues, and lack of a support system (Clawson, Dutch, Solomon, & Grace, 2009). One common characteristic for a sexually exploited girl is a history of childhood sexual abuse. According to the research of Raphael (2004), through the investigation of 20 studies of adult women who were victims of sex trafficking the percentage of those who had been sexually abused as children ranged from 33% to…

All things considered in Karla’s story has a strong impact on my opinion that human trafficking is one of the most horrendous crimes. The thought of being raped for twelve hours and by as many as thirty men each day, seven days a week makes me feel bitter to my stomach. Life is disturbing when you are held against your will and violated every day. Karla missed out on things such as driving, prom and hanging out with friends that most girls twelve through sixteen usually participate in, she was robbed of her teenage years which are supposed to be a cheerful time of life. I cannot fathom how people can be so immoral and enslave people or encourage enslavement by paying to rape slaves held hostage.…

The human trafficking industry is an illegal multimillion dollar money making platform, which thousands upon thousands of women, children and men are exposed to every day. I was introduced to this form of slavery while reading the novel Traffiked, by Sophie Hayes; the true story of how the author herself was forced into the world of trafficking and was a victim of forced prostitution, to make money for a man whom she loved and thought loved her too. Throughout this report I will be discussing the different forms of human trafficking; specifically the sex slave industry, the process and experiences sex slaves endure, what organizations have been set up to assist and aid victims and survivors of trafficking and the impact of sex trafficking on…
