Pushing Boundaries

Milton Berle once said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” Pushing boundaries is something I want to do. I want to be able to open new doors for those who come after me and experience what I was not able to. Such opportunities include seeing the world right after high school and going to the college of my dreams without being held back by lack of money.
Choosing a career was the most difficult decision I have ever had to face; and it still is. Pursuing the surgical field of medicine is a major choice that cannot be made lightly. Because of this, I had to continuously think if it was right for me and everything about it that would take away from my life.     The article, “My Last Day as a Surgeon” by Paul Kalanithi, made me realize how important our health is and how important it is to stay determined in what we do. It was extremely disappointing to read an article that describes the last day of someone’s dream life. Paul Kalanithi’s educational life was very impressive and the dedication that he had put in to accomplish his dreams was exceptional. In the article, he mentioned how he kept an “extra set of clothes for the night [he doesn’t] leave,” which gave me the basic overview of the hours for a surgeon.
