My original plan of becoming a paramedic was swept away by a new calling. Exploring higher education was intimidating due to existing circumstances within my family. My parents had only completed high school, which made traversing the challenges of university daunting. Nevertheless, I pursued my goals with passion and determination. I knew the correct decision was made after defeating a debilitating injury and experiencing the healing provided by medicine.
Shoulder impingement is best described as persistent, sharp pain on the anterior shoulder. This condition makes performing everyday activities not only difficult, but agonizing. After living with this condition for two years, I was gifted with a unique perspective and a new appreciation for medical care. Instead of dismissing the injury, I reflected on the experiences gained as a patient on the receiving end of care.
