Pursuing A Strong Leadership Role In A Football Team

Decent Essays
When it comes to myself in a leadership role, my style depends on whether or not I am on or off the field. Being captain of some of of my football and soccer teams I have had to take on a strong leadership role in order to lead my teams to victory. When it comes to being on the field I take on more of an authoritative style. This promotes the importance of succeeding in the moment. Anything can change within seconds in a game so a strong authoritarian leader can be the difference between winning or losing. Strong leadership can increase the level of performance during the game and is vital to a winning team. I have found that being authoritative on the field can keep the energy up during a game and keep other players motivated and focused.

Leadership Style Self-Assessment 1 After taking the style questionnaire during while studying the Leadership Grid in Northouse; as expected, I found that my leadership style varies, although of the three theories discussed, more closely relates to team leadership. My assessment found my strengths to be with authority compliance (9,1) and team management (9,9). As suggested by Northouse (2012), “The 9,1 style of leadership places heavy emphasis on task and job requirements, and less emphasis on people, except to the extent that people are tools for getting the job done” (p. 79). The Team Management style is based on tasks and relationships. I consider myself more tasks orientated and analytical, while spending less time with my subordinates’ personal issues.…

It takes motivation and positivity as well the skill set to be a strong leader on the administrative side of things. Some of my favorite captains, Correll Maley and Amanda Leung, have wonderfully led the team and are both people I look up to. The captain should be someone who can support the team when they’re down and rally for them when they’re up. The captain should be someone who can handle the tasks that are required of them and who can work well with their other co-captains. The captain should also be someone who genuinely wants to lead, motivate, and have fun with their peers.…

When leading a team, I do not want to be an autocratic leader where an individual is afraid to voice their opinion or think that their voice is not heard. In terms of leadership style, I would consider myself more towards social leadership that focused more on teamwork, resolving disputes and providing support (Myers, 2013). Instead of directing the other group members on what to do, I distributed my authority with my group members by giving them the opportunity to voice their ideas as well as involving them in decisions making processes. I believed that group members felt more appreciated when their suggestions were acknowledged which then enhanced more creative and productive thoughts. This was due to the fact that brainstorming that involved the entire group encourages and stimulates ideas from different individuals (Nemeth, Personnaz, Personnaz & Goncalo,…
