Final Paper
Before taking Sociology 11, I had no idea of the many intricacies of society. I thought I had a very good grasp on my place in the world, but now I am not so sure. I knew about the basic social injustices and phenomena that occurred daily, but I had no idea how far these still waters really ran. Everyone knows their own personal story, we all know our race, gender, age, ethnicity, and religious views. We know what is considered as acceptable social behavior, as well as the punishment for violating social norms or being deviant; but what is really behind all of the things that we know? Do we really understand the ramifications that go hand in hand with our social reality?

My parents believed that I would get a better high school education in the United States. I left my parents and sisters in Canada to journey into the unknown. I had previously visited New York all the time but, leaving my parents and sisters was a very new experience. At an early age my family instilled in me that education was and will always be the key to upward mobility so when asked the question throughout high school “Why don't you consider a career in nursing?” I would turn my face up and say "Me? Sonyah? A nurse? NEVER! " I'm sure you’re probably wondering why people would ask me expressly about a nursing career; the thing is, I come from a very long line of nurses. If you've ever been to Lincoln Hospital, Montifiore Medical Center, or North Central Bronx Hospital and heard someone say "Nurse Bramble!" Over the course of 2 months, I would visit her daily in the facility, paying close attention to the care she would receive. It really touched my heart to see the level of professionalism, the utmost care, respect, compassion, empathy and attentiveness on the part of the amazing staff; especially the nurses. After it was established that there was nothing more that could be done for my grandmother at the facility, the decision was made that she would be brought home to live out her final days in comfort, surrounded by loved ones. Again nursing kicked in, my grandmother was cared for around the clock by her children and grandchildren, 5 of whom are Registered
