Earning a Masters in Business Administration has always been a long awaited goal of mine. I grew up in a small country in southern Africa known as Zambia and moved to the United States at the age of 16 with a goal of opening and managing my own pharmacy one day. I earned my Bachelors in General Studies at the age of 20 and my Doctor of Pharmacy Degree at the age of 24 from University of Louisiana at Monroe. After graduation, I knew the first thing I needed was work experience. I applied for several jobs and few weeks later I secured a position as a staff pharmacist with CVS. At CVS I found myself making the schedule, holding interviews to hire pharmacy technicians, making sure the inventory is managed correctly, and generating reports to provide a summary of the business to the pharmacy supervisor. As I continued to work and excel at my position, I was offered a promotion as a pharmacy manager which I thought about for a few weeks and finally decided to decline the offer and continue as a staff pharmacist.

I have decided to pursue PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals to have the opportunity to be trained by the best to become the best clinician, teacher, and researcher that I can be. A good friend of mine, who has completed his PGY1, and currently going through his PGY2 in Hematology Oncology at UNC Hospitals, Dr. Ryan Beechinor, has mentioned many great things about the program. I am most impressed with the structure of the residency project. The flipped research model is extremely beneficial for residents. I have had firsthand experience where the IRB approval process delayed me from working on the project.…

Then, I worked as a faculty member (i.e. teaching assistant) in the Pharmacy Practice Department at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in KSA, which included academic, research, and clinical duties. During which, I developed my teaching, research, and clinical skills, and became more interested in Clinical Pharmacy education. Since KSAU-HS was affiliated with the National Guard Health Affairs Hospital, I was fortunate enough to get the chance to have a couple of clinical rotations that helped further develop my clinical knowledge and skills. Then, I decided to join the University of Illinois at Chicago to earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree where my clinical knowledge expanded dramatically, improved my time management and communication skills, worked effectively on interdisciplinary teams, and enjoyed studying and working in a very diverse community. As a member of Health Occupations Students of America, I competed in dental terminology in the interest of diversifying my knowledge of the medical field and made it to state-level competition. I also joined a rigorous Pharmacy Technician Certification class and interned at CVS, an experience that taught me to work fast and in an organized fashion, be social with colleagues and customers, and teamwork skills such as assisting a customer or answering phone calls for co-workers. These responsibilities taught me to make use of time and be more social. This environment was amazing to me because I had always wanted to understand how a pharmacy is managed. Before my family migrated to America from Vietnam when I was twelve, we were living in a society where health was not an everyday issue or concern. Vietnam was a society where the poor had low access to health care, thus creating an indifference toward their health that resulted in many deaths from diseases. The Vietnamese economy went through a depression during the war, making medical instruments rare and expensive, and ultimately resulted in a gradual decline in health education. My desire to be pharmacist arose when I learned that these diseases were treatable, curable, and preventable with proper care and services from trained personnel.…

As I sat anxiously in my desk the last day of high school, I felt compelled and overwhelmed to decide what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare because of my mother, who was a registered nurse. Witnessing the love and care my mother had for every patient even when she was not on the clock really inspired the drive for me to impact the lives of others just as I saw her do. Although after I shadowed one of my mother’s colleagues, I knew I could not handle the gory aspects that are associated with most healthcare professions; however, this shadowing experience led me to discover my initial desire to help others and make a difference. I owe my foremost interest in pursuing a career in pharmacy to my paternal grandparents.…
