Pursuing A P. D Personal Statement

Decent Essays
I grew up in a small city in the middle part of mainland China and went to college in Hong Kong. Now I am pursuing a Ph.D. degree in the United States. This constantly changing environment helps me understand how it feels like to find myself outside the dominant culture. The teachers, classmates, roommates and friends I have met in the past had dramatically different backgrounds. Getting to know and getting along well with them have helped me learn to respect people of different culture and traditions, and also get everyone involved and participating despite the differences.

Part 1: College is a great place to meet new people of all different cultures. In fact, one experience I had with an individual of another culture took place at college. During my freshman year at Towson University, I enrolled in a Biology lecture with over 150 students and I happened to sit next to, Bella, a girl who was from Italy. As the semester went on, I got to know her better and learned that she was studying abroad for a semester. Even though she spoke English fluently, she had a very strong accent and I later learned that her native language was Italian.…

I often think about how my life would have been very different if I had remained in China, where many citizens are not allowed the freedom of choice and opportunity .Being one of very few Asian students in my school, it has been a challenge to maintain my individuality and not be pressured into fitting into a stereotype. I grew up in a family that places a strong emphasis on education believing that the more education I have, the more choices I have. This belief has served as motivation for my academic success thus far. I feel that it is important to give back to my community and to date I have completed 152 hours of documented community service.…

In the area I live in, there is a mix of many different cultures. I’ve lived in the same area for almost 14 years and I've seen different culture groups grow and others slowly decrease. The language the was usually heard when I first moved in has also changed throughout the years and has had an impact on the type of people I now interact with on the daily basis. With the different cultures growing and moving into the neighborhood I live in I have begun to see a change in the type of local shops, clothing, and food. Even at the local schools, I can see the changes in culture and how schools try to have better interactions with the children.…

Based on the idea of being a first-generation college student, I have more experience with the tensions that come along with transitioning to college. Most of which, are cultural shocks. To start off, cultural shocks would be things that involve how easily one can adapt to a new environment. Even with help from advisors, professors, and fellow students, it is all a big step towards possibly redefining the way one will see different ideas. One culture shock that I have experienced is the lack of being able to redirect the way I am used to doing things.…

During my childhood, I spent a year in China experiencing my cultural roots. My family then moved to Los Angeles where I have spent nearly thirteen years of my life exposed to a blend of different cultures and communities. The diversity encourages me to stay true to my background and enjoy standing out rather than fitting in.…

Having cultural diversity integrated into my childhood and growth has shaped me to be open and accepting to different cultures. On the other hand, some factors have been more sudden and have required that I adapt quickly. For instance when taking my first trip to Europe, I didn’t experience much of a culture-shock since I recognized and adapted well to their customs. I realized that those that I’ve encountered had a different lifestyle and what originally seemed to be different to me was normal to them. Another example, when going to both catholic elementary and high school, I didn’t have many opportunities growing up to interact with people from different religions other than my own.…
