I had gotten my feet wet by taking several health classes, and volunteering with the school athletic trainer during my high school years. I also plunged into it by working as a certified nurse’s assistant at a nursing home, and as a home health care aid, and direct support staff doing respite work. I absolutely loved this work, being able to commutate one on one and help people is what I love to do. It also gave me a general idea of which area of occupational therapy I would enjoy working in. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to attend North Dakota State University. My dad and sister are NDSU alumni, so furthering my education where they did provides us with a unique bond. Additionally, not many of my relatives attended college, allowing me to see the difficulties in providing for oneself and family without a college degree. Although I know the next seven years are going to be challenging, extremely strenuous, and will push me to the edge of my comfort zone, the satisfaction of administering medical services to those who need them will make it worthwhile. Not only will I be able to care for others with a Pharm.…

On Wednesday, September 21st, the junior and senior class of my school went to Franklinton High School—where we were introduced to post-secondary institutions such as state universities and local community colleges. I admittedly already had a fair idea of what I planned on doing after school. My “carefully thought-out plan” was this: I would go to Northshore Technical Community College in the summer to get my CNA so that I can gain the patient-care experience necessary for my later plans for college. I would then attend LSU for four years and earn a bachelor’s in dietetics, and possibly minor in psychology. Afterward, I would attend a PA school somewhere within the US—possibly the one at LSU.…

I have always desired a career that will make a difference by targeting populations, highlight prevention methods, and one that will be a challenge. Prior to obtaining my MPH, I had the opportunity to intern with the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH) in the Environmental Health Branch program called the Chemical Hazards Program (CHP). I assisted the CHP staff by creating and maintaining a database from their Environmental Health Education Needs Assessment on a Superfund site investigation in relation to uranium in private well-water. The health data was then evaluated, recommendations were made, and, as a result, I co-authored the Environmental Health Education Needs Assessment Report which entailed details of the project/study.…
