Majority of the individuals in my family dropped out of high school or got pregnant at an early age. I made a vow to myself that my story will not be played out like that, and I made sure it didn’t. at the beginning of college, I was facing financial challenge. Being that I recently moved to the united states, I was not getting full financial aid, so my mom had to work two or more jobs and sometimes barrowed money to pay for my tuition. My mother was very supportive and did whatever needed to be done to make sure I completed college, so to her I attribute my success.…
In 2010 I was a person who was unsure about all the aspects of my life. I felt as if life had no meaning to it. I was afraid of what the future held for me due to the fact that it never seemed to be clear to me. I had no education goals whatsoever, I was extremely unmotivated to succeed in life. I never valued anything that I had, that being the love my family and friends gave me and all the personal belongings that my parents provided me with.…
Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. Although at times I have struggled to overcome these challenges, I have always persevered and pushed past each one with my determination to be the best I can be, which has matured me into the young adult I am today.…
My background consist of a small Hispanic family were my mother was the first one from her family to graduate from college with an associates degree. Some how I always knew I had to live up to that and eventually graduate with an associate’s degree. At the time I had a mind set that this was the highest accomplishment in my family that could be achieved and never thought of going beyond it. My mother had a very modest job working as a teacher aid. She always encouraged me to work in the School District because it was a good pay and whenever I had children, which I eventually did, I would have the same school schedule as them and would be able to spend time with them in the holidays or any other vacations.…
Throughout my high school career, and previous to high school, I have taken various science and art classes. These are subjects that have always caught my attention and I plan to continue attending classes that fall under these categories, during my senior year and throughout college. “So, what are you thinking of majoring in college? You’re going to be a doctor right?” These are the words that come out of the mouths of every family member I talk to. My response is the same every time they ask: “No. I want to go into business.”…
Now at the age of thirty-one I am back in college in the pursuit of a Master’s Degree in Science and Nursing. It has taken me many years to figure out how my life should be and where I want to go. Many would analyze this and say that the lack of a proper parental presence in my life that caused me to become lost. Others would say that statistically I had no chance, being Hispanic with only one parent and living in what now is known as low-income neighborhood. I would have to argue against all these and say that I beat the odds that were against me.…
It has been a great ten years since I graduated from Temple. When I began getting my things together for this reunion I couldn’t help but look back on all that my engineering degree from Temple has allowed me to accomplish. Spending my first year of school at Virginia Tech taught me some tough lessons about work ethic and drive that I never picked up in high school. Transferring going into my sophomore year was one of the greatest decisions I could have made. Temple, being much closer to home as well as being my parents alma mater really made it feel like the right fit.…
“The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it's possible to achieve the American dream.” Tommy Hilfiger. In the Declaration of Independence which notified the British government of the separation of their power the famous phrase “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” began this idea of the American Dream. But some have found this phrase not to be true, working with a refugee I found their interpretation of this idea fascinating. They felt that moving to America would make them automatically rich and privileged.…
Both of my parents came from Mexico without finishing high school. They came here in hopes of making a decent living but without a diploma, they could only work low paying jobs. Growing up they always told me to get the diploma and go to college so I don't end up like them. Almost all of my family hasn't finished high school and they ended up just like my parents. So I want to go to college and become able to financially support my family to where my mom can quit working and do what she always wanted to.…

After my father had passed on, any hopes for me to continue with my education were shattered.…

Like Mother, Like Daughter I am sitting on a wet bench. Of course, it would occur to me to go to a park right after the rain, all alone while the rays of the sun start to reappear making the park, which looked so dull and empty upon arriving, look full of life and color. Its warmth grows this sensation within me as if everything will be okay. How is this possible? I walked myself into this park with an emotion that pressed against my chest; it feels as if a thick liquid was replacing my blood and changing my body to feel heavy.…
